Kort beskrivning och storlek:
Ganska högväxt, flerårig ört.
Förekomst:
Hundkäx är vanlig i hela Sverige, den växer oftast på öppen mark men förekommer också i lundar och glesa skogar.
Egenskaper:
Hundkäx blommar från maj till juli med små vita blommor som sitter i flockar.
Stjälken kan bli upp till en och en halv meter hög och är vanligen grenig, fårad och hårig nertill och kal upptill. Bladen är triangulära och två till tre gånger pardelade.
Blomflockarna saknar allmänt svepe, det enskilda svepet består av fem hårkantade svepeblad. Det mest karaktäristiska för arten är dess frukter som är mörkbruna, blanka, helt släta och avlånga med ett kort spröt upptill.
Etymologi:
Artnamnet sylvestris kommer av latinets sylva (skog). Hundloka och hundkäx är de vanligaste svenska namnen, enligt Nyman var namnen geografiskt åtskilda och han skriver att i "Svea-rike kallas växten vanligen Hundloka eller Hundfloka, i Göta-rike Hundkax (Hundkäxa)".
